The University of Abuja (UniAbuja) has expelled 28 students for disciplinary breaches, including alleged examination malpractice, cultism, and forgery of academic results.
The decision was reached during the university’s senate meeting, the institution’s acting Director of Information, Habib Yakoob, stated in a press release on Sunday.
Yakoob said the expulsions followed a review of the report and recommendations submitted by the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC).
The affected students were reportedly involved in offences such as threats to life, assault, conspiracy, burglary, theft, cult-related activities, and the possession and use of hard drugs. Some were also accused of falsifying ‘O’ Level results uploaded on the university’s portal for admission purposes, and of ignoring repeated invitations to appear before the disciplinary committee.
The statement added that the senate approved the withdrawal of certificates for 15 former students who failed to honour committee invitations despite repeated notices. Nine students were cleared of all allegations after investigations, while 33 others received warnings for infractions ranging from conspiracy to hostel racketeering and fighting.
Vice-Chancellor Hakeem Fawehinmi reaffirmed the university’s commitment to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment. He emphasised that academic integrity and discipline would be enforced without compromise. Fawehinmi commended the SDC for its thorough handling of the cases and urged students to conduct themselves responsibly to protect their academic futures.
