The former media aide to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has attributed the low voter turnout in the recently concluded Federal Capital Territory (FCT) council elections to the timing of the exercise during the holy month of Ramadan.
Speaking on the development, Ahmad explained that the observance of Ramadan typically alters daily routines, limits physical movement during fasting hours, and increases focus on spiritual activities. He argued that these factors directly impacted voter participation across numerous polling units.
He noted that the situation has sparked calls from stakeholders and election observers urging the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reconsider the announced dates for next year’s general elections, which also fall within Ramadan.
Ahmad expressed particular concern over the scheduling of the governorship and State and National Assembly elections just two days before Eid-el-Fitr, a period traditionally dedicated to preparations, travel, family engagements, and heightened economic activities ahead of the celebration.
“Civic responsibility remains essential regardless of timing, but election scheduling that considers major religious observances could significantly enhance voter turnout, inclusivity, and overall democratic participation,” he said in a post on X.
He added, “For many residents, Ramadan comes with adjusted routines, reduced movement during fasting hours, and greater attention to spiritual commitments. These realities understandably affected turnout in several polling units. This is why stakeholders are urging INEC to review next year’s electoral calendar thoughtfully.”
Observers note that aligning election dates with socio-religious calendars could help strengthen democratic engagement in Nigeria, particularly in regions with significant Muslim populations.
