ASUU Threatens Nationwide Strike Over Unimplemented Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has threatened to shut down academic activities in public universities across Nigeria if the Federal and state governments fail to address the union’s outstanding demands.

The threat was contained in a statement issued on Friday by the ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, following an emergency meeting of the union’s National Executive Council at the University of Abuja.

ASUU said it could resume strike action “without any further notice” over the failure of the government to fully implement the December 2025 agreement reached with the union.

The union also demanded the payment of the remaining three and a half months of withheld salaries owed to its members, as well as the remittance of billions of naira deducted from lecturers’ salaries.

According to ASUU, the December 2025 agreement followed more than eight years of negotiations and struggles but had yet to be fully implemented by the Federal Government and several state governments.

The union warned that failure to address the outstanding issues would leave it with no option but to embark on another nationwide strike.

“Unless immediate and concrete steps are taken to fully and comprehensively address issues bordering on the welfare and well-being of Nigerian academics, ASUU-NEC will not accept any blame for calling out its members on a nationwide strike action within the shortest time possible,” Piwuna said.
