Osun Assembly Moves to Amend UNIOSUN Law 20 Years After Establishment

The Osun State House of Assembly has commenced moves to amend the law establishing Osun State University, UNIOSUN, 20 years after the institution was established.

 

The Speaker of the House, Adewale Egbedun, disclosed this during plenary on Wednesday following the receipt of a letter from Governor Ademola Adeleke seeking the amendment of the Executive Bill.

 

The letter, dated July 27, 2026, was presented to the lawmakers during plenary.

 

Consideration of the bill had been delayed by activities surrounding the 2026 Osun State governorship election and related matters.

 

Presenting the policy thrust of the bill, the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Sikiru Bajepade, said the proposed amendment would extend the tenure of the Vice-Chancellor of Osun State University by two years.

 

According to Bajepade, the amendment would also provide a framework for grants and scholarships for students of the institution and strengthen public interest in the university’s continued development.

 

Contributing to the debate, Taofeek Olayiwola, Adewumi Adeyemi, Lawrence Adeoti, Kanmi Ajibola and Adekunle Oladimeji supported the proposed extension of the Vice-Chancellor’s tenure.

 

The lawmakers said the university had recorded significant development during the tenure of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Odunayo Olabooye, and argued that the extension would help sustain the progress.

 

They also said the move would improve staff welfare, institutional stability and productivity while strengthening the academic environment.

 

“The Vice-Chancellor has done excellently well. The extension could provide continuity and serve as a standard for whoever would assume leadership of the university afterwards,” the lawmakers said.

 

The Speaker, Egbedun, aligned himself with the lawmakers’ submissions, saying the proposed tenure extension could bring various benefits to the institution and support its continued development.

 

The bill subsequently passed second reading after it was moved by the Deputy Majority Leader, Adekunle Oladimeji, and seconded by Lawrence Adeoti.

 

Earlier, Egbedun welcomed lawmakers back to legislative duties after the governorship election and urged them to resume with renewed commitment to quality representation, transparency and responsive leadership.

 

During the sitting, the Osun State Debt Management Office Establishment Amendment Bill 2026 also passed first reading.

 

The Speaker subsequently urged members to study the bill ahead of consideration of its policy thrust before the House adjourned.
