NIS Inauguration: Don Warns Surveyors Against Falling Behind as Technology Advances

A university don, Prof. Oluwafemi Oyetunde Adeleke, has warned surveyors against falling behind in the face of rapid technological advancements, calling for a comprehensive review of the surveying curriculum in Nigerian institutions.

Adeleke, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Ilorin, made the call while delivering a guest lecture at the inauguration of the 20th Executive Committee of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Kwara State Branch, in Ilorin on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

Speaking on technological advancement in surveying, the don described education as the bedrock of professional development and urged practitioners to embrace innovations such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing and drone technology.

He said the integration of modern technologies into professional training and practice was essential for surveyors to remain relevant and contribute meaningfully to national development.

The ceremony also featured the inauguration of a new executive committee led by Surv. Ishola Mobolaji Issa, MNIS, who succeeded the outgoing chairman, Surv. O. A. Lere.

In his acceptance speech, Issa thanked members for the confidence reposed in him, pledging to run an inclusive administration focused on professional development, members’ welfare and stronger collaboration with the Kwara State Government on land-related matters.

Other members of the executive committee include Surv. S. K. Adebayo, Vice-Chairman; Surv. Abdulraheem Fatai G., Secretary; Surv. Gbemisola Olatunde, Assistant Secretary; and Surv. A. G. Aremu, Council Representative.

Others are Surv. Boluwatife S. Bukoye, Financial Secretary; Surv. Iganyi A. Rashidat, Public Relations Officer; Surv. Tijanni Kehinde, Treasurer; Surv. Kehinde Oladapo, Internal Auditor; and the outgoing chairman, Surv. O. A. Lere, as an ex-officio member.

Earlier, Lere expressed appreciation to members for their support throughout his tenure and urged them to extend similar cooperation to the new leadership to ensure the continued growth of the institution.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, fellows of the institution and members of the surveying profession from across Kwara State.
