Defending champions Nigeria will look to revive their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign when they take on Zambia in a crucial Group C clash at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on Saturday night.

The Super Falcons head into the encounter under pressure after a shock 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their opening game, while Zambia strengthened their title credentials with a commanding 6-0 victory over Egypt.

The contrasting results leave Nigeria needing at least a positive result to keep their quarter-final hopes alive, while Zambia could secure qualification with a win if Malawi avoid defeat against Egypt.

According to the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Saturday’s fixture will be the fifth WAFCON meeting between both countries and the third consecutive edition in which they have faced each other.

History favours the nine-time African champions, who have won three of their previous four WAFCON meetings against Zambia, scoring 15 goals and conceding just one.

Nigeria recorded 6-0 and 4-0 group-stage victories in 2014 and 2018 respectively before Zambia claimed a 1-0 win in the third-place match in 2022. The Super Falcons, however, responded with a 5-0 quarter-final triumph over the Copper Queens at the last edition.

A defeat on Saturday would see Nigeria suffer successive group-stage losses at the tournament for the first time and leave the defending champions on the brink of a historic first-round exit if Malawi also defeat Egypt.

The loss to Malawi also ended Nigeria’s long-standing record of never conceding three goals in a WAFCON match and marked their first-ever defeat to a tournament debutant.

Despite the setback, captain Rasheedat Ajibade and striker Uchenna Kanu were on target for Nigeria. Ajibade now has six WAFCON goals across four editions, while Kanu has scored three goals at the continental tournament.

Zambia, meanwhile, head into the contest in confident mood after recording the biggest WAFCON victory in their history.

Captain Barbra Banda starred with four goals against Egypt, becoming the first Zambian player to score a hat-trick at the tournament. She now has seven WAFCON goals and is the first player since Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala in 2016 to score four goals in a single WAFCON match.

The Copper Queens also registered a tournament-high 34 attempts on goal against Egypt, with Banda recording 11 shots while Grace Chanda provided six key passes.

Nigeria will be hoping their dominant record against Zambia and their history of bouncing back from opening-match defeats in previous editions will inspire another positive response.

Kick-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. local time (8 p.m. GMT) in Rabat.
