Cristiano Ronaldo announces retirement from international football

Portuguese football superstar, Cristiano Ronaldo, has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his 23-year career with the national team.

The 41-year-old made the announcement on Thursday in an emotional farewell message to Portuguese supporters, confirming that he would hand over the national team’s number seven shirt after the November international break.

Ronaldo, who made his debut for Portugal in August 2003, described the decision as difficult, noting that it was made not only with his head but also with his heart.

He said he was grateful for the privilege and responsibility of representing his country for more than two decades, adding that he was proud of the journey and everything he had given to the national team.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward bows out with 234 appearances and 146 goals for Portugal, making him the most-capped player and highest goalscorer in men’s international football.

During his illustrious international career, Ronaldo captained Portugal to victory at the 2016 European Championship and helped the country win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

Reflecting on his legacy, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner noted that while goals eventually fade and trophies find their place in museums, the place he holds in people’s hearts would remain unforgettable.

His retirement announcement follows a 23-year journey that established him as one of the most influential figures in international football.

Portugal will now look to a new generation of players as the country prepares to move forward without its long-serving captain.
