Spain edge Argentina to win 2026 FIFA World Cup

Spain have been crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in Sunday’s final.

Substitute Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the second period of extra time to seal Spain’s second World Cup title, 16 years after lifting their first in South Africa in 2010.

Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez produced a string of outstanding saves to keep his side in the contest, but the holders suffered a major setback deep into second-half stoppage time when midfielder Enzo Fernández was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Pau Cubarsí.

With Argentina reduced to 10 men, Spain dominated the extra period and eventually broke the deadlock when Nico Williams set up Torres, who calmly slotted home the winner.

The victory capped an impressive campaign for Luis de la Fuente’s side, who combined defensive discipline with their trademark possession-based style to reclaim football’s biggest prize.

Argentina, captained by Lionel Messi, battled throughout the tournament and reached the final after memorable victories over Egypt and England in the knockout stages.

However, the defending champions were unable to breach Spain’s resolute defence as La Roja secured their second FIFA World Cup title.
