Atiku Appoints Kenneth Okonkwo as Spokesman Ahead of 2027 Poll
Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar, has appointed actor-turned-politician and party chieftain, Kenneth Okonkwo, as his spokesperson.
Okonkwo announced the appointment in a statement issued on Thursday through his official X account, expressing gratitude to Atiku for the confidence reposed in him.
“I give God all the glory for being appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his spokesperson. I sincerely appreciate the confidence he has placed in me,” he said.
He described the appointment as a reflection of Atiku’s leadership style, noting that the former Vice President encourages dialogue and constructive engagement rather than taking offence at differing opinions.
According to Okonkwo, discussions with Atiku and other leaders of the ADC addressed concerns over the political interests of the South-East within the framework of the Electoral Act, 2026, and prevailing political realities.
He expressed appreciation to key party stakeholders, including Dr. Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Dr. Ekene Onwuka, for their roles in strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general election.
Okonkwo also thanked his family, supporters and friends for their prayers and encouragement, while seeking continued support as he assumes his new responsibility.
The appointment comes weeks after Okonkwo publicly criticised the party’s choice of vice-presidential candidate, arguing that the decision could further sideline the South-East in Nigeria’s political leadership.
The ADC later confirmed former Rivers State Governor and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as Atiku Abubakar’s running mate for the 2027 presidential election following Atiku’s emergence as the party’s presidential candidate.
