19-Year-Old Andreeva Wins First Grand Slam Title at French Open

Russia’s Mirra Andreeva has claimed her maiden Grand Slam title after defeating Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska in the women’s singles final at the French Open on Saturday.

The 19-year-old secured a straight-sets victory, 6-3, 6-2, to become the youngest Roland Garros champion since Monica Seles, who won her third consecutive title in Paris in 1992 at the age of 18.

With the triumph, Andreeva also becomes the first player born after 2005—male or female—to win a Grand Slam title.

The victory adds the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen to her growing trophy collection, which already includes two WTA 1000 titles.

Despite the defeat, Chwalinska’s remarkable run from the qualifying rounds saw her win nine matches in Paris, making her the first qualifier in the Open era to reach the final. The performance is expected to boost her ranking significantly, moving her up to world number 21 and securing her place in major tournaments.

The final began with early nerves from both players amid windy conditions on Centre Court, leading to multiple breaks of serve. However, Andreeva gradually gained control after a tightly contested opening set.

She broke decisively late in the first set before maintaining momentum in the second, racing to a 3-0 lead as Chwalinska struggled with consistency.

Although the Polish qualifier staged a brief fightback, breaking Andreeva while she served for the match, the Russian quickly recovered to seal the victory in the next game with a powerful backhand winner.

Andreeva collapsed to her knees in celebration after clinching the title, marking the biggest achievement of her young career so far.
