The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly condemned remarks by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, describing them as inciting and capable of undermining national peace and security.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the governor’s reference to the historic “Operation Wetie” crisis during an opposition summit in Ibadan was reckless and inappropriate for a sitting chief executive.

Morka stated that invoking such a violent episode in Nigeria’s political history amounted to incitement, warning that it could trigger unrest and destabilize the country.

According to him, “Governor Makinde’s comments are not only reckless but constitute a clear and present threat to peace and national security. It is disturbing that a sitting governor, who is constitutionally saddled with the responsibility of safeguarding lives and property, would make such inflammatory remarks.”

The APC spokesman stressed that Makinde’s position as governor places a higher burden on him to promote unity and stability, rather than evoke memories of political violence.

He added, “By invoking ‘Operation Wetie,’ one of the darkest episodes in our political history, the governor has shown himself to be unworthy of the office he occupies.”

The ruling party further called on security and intelligence agencies to take the development seriously, urging them to act proactively to prevent any breakdown of law and order.

Morka noted that constitutional immunity does not shield public office holders from accountability in matters relating to national security, insisting that no individual should be allowed to endanger the country under any guise.

The party also dismissed allegations by opposition figures about Nigeria drifting into a one-party state, describing such claims as baseless and a distraction from internal crises within opposition parties.

“The opposition parties are grappling with self-inflicted challenges, including poor leadership, internal divisions, and disregard for due process. Their attempt to frame these failures as a national issue is both misleading and unacceptable,” he said.

Reaffirming the APC’s position, Morka maintained that the party remains focused on governance and strengthening democratic institutions under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He added that Nigerians would ultimately decide in the 2027 general elections based on performance and credible policy alternatives, rather than what he described as “fear-mongering and false narratives” by opposition actors.
