The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned the deadly Palm Sunday attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North, Plateau State, describing the incident as “unacceptable” and calling for immediate action against the perpetrators.

In a statement signed by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN expressed grief over the killings, which reportedly involved attackers wearing uniforms resembling those of security forces. The apex Christian body said the attack exposes the harsh reality that many Nigerians no longer feel safe, even in their homes or on sacred days.

“Palm Sunday is meant to be a day of peace, of hope, of reflection. Instead, it became a day of bloodshed,” the statement read. “Innocent Nigerians — men, women, and children — were hunted and killed in cold blood. This is not just tragic; it is unacceptable.”

CAN warned that continued inaction risks eroding public trust in Nigeria’s ability to protect its citizens. The association urged security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to investigate the use of fake military uniforms, arrest those responsible, and ensure justice is served.

Acknowledging the Plateau State Government’s response, CAN stressed that temporary measures are insufficient, calling for lasting security for all communities. Archbishop Okoh also appealed to Christians to remain vigilant during Holy Week, advising congregations to work closely with local authorities and security agencies.

“A nation cannot keep bleeding like this and expect to move forward,” the statement added. “We owe the dead justice. We owe the living protection. And we owe our future a country where no community wakes up to gunfire on a sacred day.”
