S’African Army Chief Visits NDC, Seeks Stronger Military Cooperation In Africa

The Chief of the South African Army, Lieutenant-General Lawrence Mbatha, has visited the National Defence College (NDC) in Abuja, stressing the need for stronger collaboration among African militaries to address emerging security challenges on the continent.

Mbatha made the call during a visit to the college on Sunday as part of efforts to deepen defence cooperation and professional military education between Nigeria and South Africa.

A statement by the Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, said the South African Army chief commended the college for its role in developing strategic leaders capable of tackling complex security issues across Africa.

He described institutions such as the National Defence College as important platforms for knowledge sharing, cooperation and the development of collective approaches to peace and security among African armed forces.

According to him, the evolving security environment across the continent demands closer collaboration among defence institutions and senior military leaders.

Mbatha noted that professional military education remains critical in preparing senior officers for strategic decision-making, defence management and leadership responsibilities in modern security operations.

The Commandant of the National Defence College, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed, who was represented by Rear Admiral Muhammed Dahiru, welcomed the delegation and described the visit as a reflection of the strong defence relationship between Nigeria and South Africa.

He said such high-level engagements would further strengthen strategic cooperation, deepen professional exchanges and enhance collaborative efforts aimed at promoting peace and security across Africa.

Ahmed added that the National Defence College remains Nigeria’s apex institution for strategic military education, established to prepare selected senior military officers and civilian officials for higher responsibilities in national security, defence management and policy formulation.

He also noted that the college hosts participants from several allied countries, thereby promoting regional and international cooperation in addressing security challenges.

As part of the visit, Mbatha and members of his delegation toured the Nigerian Army Museum, where he commended the Nigerian Army for preserving historical artefacts that honour the sacrifices of fallen soldiers.

He said the preservation of materials from various theatres of operation demonstrates the army’s commitment to safeguarding its military heritage and institutional memory.
