FCT Area Council Poll: PDP’s Kasim defeats APC in Gwagwalada

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Mohammed Kasim, as the winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Kasim emerged victorious in the February 21, 2026 poll after polling 22,165 votes to defeat his closest rival.
Announcing the result on Sunday in Gwagwalada, the Returning Officer, Prof. Philip Akpeni, said the PDP candidate satisfied the requirements of the law and was duly returned elected.
“I am the Returning Officer for the 2026 FCT Area Council election for Gwagwalada held on February 21, 2026. Mohammed Kasim of the PDP, having met the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected,” he stated.
According to the results released by INEC, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Yahaya Usman, secured 17,788 votes to place second, while Mr. Biko Umar of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) came third with 1,687 votes.
The chairmanship election was conducted across the 10 wards of the council, namely Paiko, Dobi, Gwako, Ibwa, Staff Quarters, Zuba, Ikwa, Kutunku, Gwagwalada Centre and Tunga Maje.
Meanwhile, collation and declaration of results in other area councils of the FCT are ongoing.
