US President Donald Trump on Thursday singled out Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi “Remi” Tinubu, for praise during the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C., commending her leadership in faith and her role in Nigeria’s religious life.
Addressing a gathering of US lawmakers, religious leaders, and international guests, Trump acknowledged the presence of Mrs. Tinubu, describing her as “a very respected woman” and highlighting her position as a Christian pastor at one of Nigeria’s largest churches.
“We’re honoured to be joined today by the First Lady of Nigeria, who also happens to serve as a Christian pastor at the largest church in Nigeria. A very respected woman. First Lady, please, where are you? Thank you very much. It’s a great honour. Very respected person, too,” Trump said, as he scanned the audience.
Mrs. Tinubu is an ordained pastor of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), founded by Pastor Enoch Adeboye, one of Nigeria’s most influential Pentecostal ministries.
Trump’s remarks come amid heightened international attention on Nigeria’s security situation, particularly regarding claims of attacks on Christians. In October 2025, Trump designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over alleged violence against Christians—a move rejected by the Nigerian government as inaccurate and potentially divisive.
The Nigerian authorities have maintained that the country’s security challenges stem from terrorism and criminality affecting citizens of all faiths, insisting that constitutional guarantees protect both Muslims and Christians. This tension prompted a hearing on Nigeria’s security situation in the US Congress and strengthened bilateral collaboration, leading to the establishment of the US-Nigeria Working Group.
