Beijing to Ban Private Drone Possession From November

Beijing, China, will ban the possession and storage of drones within the city from November 15, 2026, under new regulations aimed at strengthening airspace and capital security.

 

The rules announced on Sunday will also prohibit drone flights within Beijing’s airspace and the transportation of drones or their components into the city.

 

Authorities will provide subsidies for owners who surrender their drones, while those who have registered their devices may have them bought back by the government. Owners may also receive free shipping to send their drones out of the city.

 

The new regulations require all drone owners to either dispose of their devices or move them out of Beijing before the November 15 deadline. Violators could face confiscation of their drones and fines.

 

The regulations cited the need to “safeguard the security of the capital.”

 

Beijing had already prohibited the sale of drones under rules introduced in May, although registered owners were permitted to retain their devices.

 

The latest restrictions follow growing concerns over airspace safety in the city, which has a population of about 22 million. Concerns were heightened in June after a small plane crashed into the capital’s tallest skyscraper, killing the pilot and injuring 13 others.

 

Drew Thompson, a senior fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University, said the ban also reflected Beijing’s broader security concerns.

 

“The Communist Party is trying to achieve absolute security and a complete ban on drones in the capital is one way to approach that,” Thompson said.

 

He added that the measure was not solely focused on terrorist threats, noting that drones could also be used for surveillance and counter-intelligence activities.

 

Drone flights in Beijing’s airspace already require government permission.

 

Under the new rules, exemptions may be granted for special purposes, including counter-terrorism, agriculture, disaster relief and research.
