The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has raised concerns over the readiness of its leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections, even as Nigerians are reportedly prepared to participate in the polls.
National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bolaji Abdullahi, highlighted on Tuesday during the launch of his memoir, The Loyalist, that disunity among opposition leaders could undermine their chances of electoral success.
Abdullahi noted that while the party has made significant strides under the leadership of former Senate President David Mark as National Chairman and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary, more cohesion is needed among its leaders and supporters.
Since July, high-profile political figures, including former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Anambra Governor Peter Obi, have joined the party, all indicating interest in the ADC presidential ticket. However, debates over zoning and candidate loyalty continue to stir divisions within the party.
Speaking on Saturday, Abdullahi urged supporters to move away from a “must-be-my-candidate” mindset, stressing that such attitudes could weaken the party’s presidential prospects. He added that unity among aspirants and followers is essential for presenting a credible challenge in 2027.
“For 2027, Nigerians are ready. But I don’t think we are ready. We are not coming together enough. We are not holding hands enough,” Abdullahi said. “Nigerians look at us; they see different enclaves and different entities. They see competition rather than cooperation. I am making this appeal: please, come together more. Let our followers channel their passion into the ADC. Our mission is bigger than any individual ambition.”
Abdullahi also disclosed that he has faced criticism from ardent supporters on social media for his stance but maintained that his appeal was necessary for the greater good of the party and the country.
