Imo LGA vice chairman suspended over alleged armed robbery

The Vice Chairman of Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, Prince Mathew Igbokwe, has been suspended indefinitely over alleged involvement in armed robbery and other acts of misconduct.

The suspension was announced in a statement issued by the Legislative Assembly of the council, led by its Leader, Benson Mgbechi, following a plenary session.

According to the statement, the decision followed a motion moved by Chief Whip Ajaa Echezolachi and seconded by Deputy Leader Steven Echeta, which was subsequently adopted by members.

The Assembly said the suspension stems from a series of allegations, including persistent absence from official duties and travelling out of the state without necessary approval.

“The most damaging of the accusations is that Igbokwe is alleged to be involved in armed robbery and other unspecified crimes,” the statement noted, adding that the claim was linked to his reported arrest and detention by the Lagos State Police Command.

The lawmakers described the alleged actions as a breach of official protocols and conduct unbecoming of a public office holder.

“Igbokwe’s alleged odious activities have brought immense shame and ridicule upon the Government of Imo State… and the entire populace of the Council,” the statement added.

The Assembly also issued a seven-day ultimatum for the vice chairman to appear before it.

It said the decision was taken in line with relevant legal provisions and aimed at protecting the integrity and image of the council.
