The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has announced Tuesday, January 20, 2026, as the first day of Sha’aban 1447 After Hijrah.
The declaration was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the Wazirin Sokoto, who doubles as Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs of the Sultanate Council.
According to the statement, Monday, January 19, 2026, completed the 29th day of Rajab 1447AH, the period set aside in Islamic tradition for the sighting of the new moon to determine the commencement of Sha’aban.
The Sultanate Council recalled that the monarch had earlier proclaimed December 22, 2025, as the first day of Rajab 1447AH, in line with the Islamic lunar calendar, making the latest announcement a continuation of the established timetable.
Sultan Abubakar urged Muslims nationwide to seize the sacred month for intensified prayers, acts of charity and peaceful coexistence.
He also called on the faithful to remain committed to national unity and to pray for Nigeria’s progress and stability.
