Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has described Senegal captain Sadio Mane as a player loved across the world for his intelligence and remarkable calmness under pressure.
Oliseh made the remarks while reflecting on Mane’s decisive role in Senegal’s victory over Morocco in Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final. The Teranga Lions triumphed after a tense encounter that was momentarily disrupted following a controversial penalty awarded to Morocco.
The incident saw Senegalese players head towards the dressing room in protest after referee Jean-Jacques Ndala pointed to the spot when Brahim Diaz was adjudged to have been fouled inside the box. Mane, however, intervened, urging his teammates to return to the pitch and maintain focus.
Speaking on CAF TV, Oliseh hailed the former Liverpool forward for displaying exemplary leadership at a critical moment.
“This is why Sadio Mane is loved worldwide – because of his intelligence and his ability to stay calm,” Oliseh said.
“He has been through many challenges in his career, yet he continues to show maturity. Mane is a hero and an example people should emulate. His intervention brought his teammates back onto the pitch and restored order.”
The Senegal skipper went on to inspire his side to victory, further cementing his status as one of Africa’s greatest football ambassadors.
