Family Cancels Burial of Gospel Singer Bunmi Akinnaanu Amid Internal Dispute

The family of late gospel singer Bunmi Akinnaanu has indefinitely postponed all previously announced burial rites, citing internal disagreements.

Akinnaanu, popularly known as Omije Ojumi, passed away on January 12 after a prolonged battle with a severe leg ailment. In the months leading up to her death, she had publicly appealed for prayers, earning widespread support from fans and the Nigerian music community.

Initial plans for her burial, shared by fellow gospel artiste Alayo Melody, included a service of songs, a candlelight procession, and a tribute night scheduled for January 20 at the LTV 8 grounds in Ikeja, Lagos, followed by a private family interment on January 21.

However, in a video posted on Instagram, Lanre Alewilese, a colleague of the late singer, confirmed that all arrangements had been “cancelled totally” due to an ongoing family dispute. He assured the public that a new date would be communicated in due course.

“This decision becomes necessary due to issues arising from within the family. We regret any inconvenience caused,” Alewilese stated in the post.

Bunmi Akinnaanu, who started singing at the age of 10, left a career in banking to pursue music full-time. She became widely known for her hit track Omije Ojumi, which remains a favourite in churches and homes across Nigeria.

The family’s decision has left fans and colleagues in mourning, awaiting updates on the rescheduled funeral arrangements.
