Rivers APC Urges Chief Judge to Halt Fubara Impeachment Process

The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on Chief Judge Simeon Amadi to comply with a court injunction restraining the state House of Assembly from pursuing the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The injunction, issued by a high court presided over by F. A. Fiberesima, bars the chief judge, the speaker, and the clerk from receiving or acting on any documents relating to the impeachment process. The order arose from suits filed under OYHC/7/CS/2026 and related cases and is set to last for seven days, with the motion hearing scheduled for January 23, 2026.

Last Friday, Speaker Martins Amaewhule had asked the chief judge to constitute a seven-member panel to investigate allegations of gross misconduct against Governor Fubara and Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu. Lawmakers accused the governor of contempt and failing to respond to prior appeals from the Assembly.

In a statement released on Saturday, Darlington Nwauju, Rivers APC publicity secretary, described the impeachment initiative as a “choreographed legislative coup d’état” that undermines the party’s collective interests in the state. Nwauju, who aligns with former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, noted that most lawmakers, despite pledging loyalty to the APC and President Bola Tinubu, were engaging in what he termed a “needless overreach.”

He urged the national leadership of the APC to invoke internal party mechanisms under Article 21(b)(iii) of the party’s 2022 constitution to intervene and prevent further crisis.

“This unfortunate path chosen by the legislative arm serves as a dangerous footnote to the health and survival of the APC in Rivers State,” Nwauju stated.

The matter continues to generate tension within the state’s political landscape as stakeholders await the outcome of the scheduled hearing.
