US Cancels Over 100,000 Visas as Trump Tightens Immigration Rules

The United States has revoked more than 100,000 visas since President Donald Trump returned to office for a second term in January, the US State Department has disclosed.

According to the department, the figure rose from about 80,000 in November 2025, with most of the affected visas belonging to business and tourist travellers who overstayed their permitted duration.

In a statement posted on X on Monday, the State Department said about 8,000 of the revoked visas were issued to foreign students, while 2,500 belonged to specialised workers.

A department spokesperson explained that many of the students and workers lost their visas due to criminal encounters with law enforcement. Nearly 500 students were said to have been implicated in drug possession and distribution, while hundreds of foreign workers reportedly had their visas withdrawn over allegations of child abuse.

The spokesperson added that about half of the specialised workers lost their visas following arrests related to drunken driving.

Last August, the Trump administration announced a comprehensive review of the estimated 55 million foreigners holding valid US visas. Reaffirming its stance, the State Department said the government would continue to deport offenders “to keep America safe.”

Upon assuming office for his second term, President Trump declared a national emergency at the southern border and vowed to clamp down on illegal immigration.

Since then, the US has tightened visa requirements, introduced policy changes and imposed travel restrictions on several countries, including Nigeria.
