NLC Sets December 17 Nationwide Protest Over Rising Insecurity, School Kidnappings

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced a nationwide protest for December 17 to draw attention to the worsening security situation across the country.

In a circular sent to all state councils on December 10, following its National Executive Committee (NEC)-in-Session meeting on December 4, the labour body condemned the increasing activities of bandits and kidnappers targeting schools and communities.

The NLC specifically cited the November 17 abduction of female students from a boarding school in Kebbi State, describing the withdrawal of security personnel from the institution shortly before the incident as “dastardly and criminal,” and demanding an immediate investigation and prosecution of those responsible.

“The surge in kidnappings targeting schoolchildren has reached an alarming and unacceptable level,” the communiqué stated.

The NLC also criticized the federal government for failing to implement adequate measures to protect schools, particularly those in remote or fringe areas.

“The NEC-in-Session directs all NLC affiliates and state councils to fully mobilise workers and civil society groups for the nationwide protest against insecurity scheduled for December 17, 2025,” the circular added.

The labour union warned that it would continue to hold the government accountable until comprehensive steps are taken to secure schools and ensure the safety of students, teachers, and communities nationwide.
