Former President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Ayo Salami, has stated that ex-President Goodluck Jonathan is constitutionally ineligible to contest the 2027 presidential election.

In a detailed opinion piece, Salami explained that the Nigerian Constitution prohibits any individual from serving as President for more than eight years. He noted that Jonathan, having completed the tenure of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before winning an election of his own, has already reached the constitutional limit.

“Any attempt by Jonathan to seek the presidency in 2027 would be a clear violation of the law,” Salami wrote. “Should he contest and win, such victory would be legally null and void, as courts would inevitably annul the mandate.”

According to the former appellate judge, Jonathan’s political ambition to contest again is “effectively and undoubtedly” prohibited, leaving no legal path for him to return to the presidency.

The comments come amid growing discussions about Nigeria’s 2027 elections and the need for new leadership.
