NIS Cracks Down on Foreigners With Expired Visas

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has begun a nationwide crackdown on foreign nationals who have overstayed their visas or violated entry rules.

Akinsola Akinlabi, NIS spokesperson, said the enforcement follows the expiration of a five-month amnesty window that allowed foreigners to regularise their status without penalties. The amnesty ran from May 1 to September 30.

“With the closure of the Amnesty period, enforcement actions will now commence nationwide against foreign nationals who have overstayed their visa or violated their entry conditions,” Akinlabi said.

The clampdown covers holders of expired visas on arrival, short visit or business visas (single and multiple entry), and expired comprehensive expatriate residence permits and automated cards (CERPAC).

Foreigners found in violation of Nigeria’s immigration laws face sanctions including fines, deportation, and possible bans from future entry:

Less than three months overstay: $15 per day or two-year entry ban.

Three months to one year: $15 per day or five-year entry ban.

Over one year: deportation, 10-year ban, or permanent ban.

Akinlabi stressed that the NIS remains committed to enforcing lawful migration, safeguarding national security, and promoting transparency and efficiency across all immigration processes.
