2027 Polls: ADC Expresses Worry Over Possible Atiku–Obi Split

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed concern over the likelihood that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi may not form a united front ahead of the 2027 general election.

ADC National Spokesperson, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, stated this during an interview on The Morning Show on Arise Television, describing the development as a “challenge” that the party is monitoring closely.

While reacting to suggestions that the Atiku–Obi dynamic posed the “greatest threat” to Nigeria’s democracy, Abdullahi cautioned against exaggeration.

> “I may not describe it in such extreme terms,” he said. “But is it a conundrum? Yes. Is it a challenge? Yes. Is it something we are concerned about? Certainly.”

Abdullahi noted that despite the national debate surrounding the political future of the two leading opposition figures, the ADC remains focused on consolidating its structures nationwide.

According to him, the party’s priority is expanding its presence across all 36 states and the FCT, rather than dwelling on potential presidential candidates.

> “Nobody in the ADC is presently discussing who will fly the party’s presidential flag,” he said. “We have a lot of work to do to strengthen our capacity and ensure we can contest across the country.”

On how the party intends to manage internal decisions ahead of 2027, Abdullahi disclosed that the ADC may consider a consensus arrangement for choosing its presidential candidate. However, where consensus fails, the party would allow an open contest.

He emphasized that the 2027 calculations should not be reduced solely to Atiku and Obi, noting that other aspirants are also interested in the race.

The ADC spokesperson further revealed that the party is in active conversations with other political platforms as part of efforts to build a stronger coalition ahead of the elections.
