Umahi: Roads Under Tinubu’s Administration Designed to Last a Century

Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has assured Nigerians that road projects executed under President Bola Tinubu’s administration are built to endure for up to 100 years.

Umahi made the declaration during inspection visits to key ongoing road projects, including the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano, Abuja–Lokoja, and Lokoja–Benin corridors on September 20, 2025. He said the administration’s approach marks a significant departure from past practices, combining durability with a strong focus on local content.

“In the past, roads barely lasted a decade. Today, President Tinubu’s infrastructure projects are designed to last between 50 and 100 years. The use of concrete technology is a long-term solution, while also promoting local participation in every phase of construction,” Umahi stated.

The minister highlighted the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano highway, valued at ₦761 billion, noting that sections I and III, spanning 118 km, have received 30 per cent of the ₦252 billion allocated, while section II, covering 72 km of reinforced concrete pavement, also has 30 per cent released.

On the Abuja–Lokoja route, Umahi praised indigenous contractors for maintaining high standards, singling out Messrs JRB Construction for excellence on the Zuba–Abaji section. He reiterated the administration’s commitment to the “Nigeria First” policy, which prioritises local firms.

He further called on Messrs Trucrete, handling the NNPC project along the Abuja–Lokoja corridor, to expedite work. “The President has instructed that NNPC projects must continue. Milestone completions will be agreed upon, but work on the carriageway should progress concurrently with other sections,” he said.

Minister of State for Works, Hon. Bello Muhammad Goronyo, also commended the administration’s resolve to complete the Abuja–Kaduna–Zaria–Kano project, noting its potential to significantly reduce travel time and congestion.

The inspection team included top officials from the Ministry of Works, such as Director of Highways Construction and Rehabilitation, Engr. Clement Ogbuagu, as well as federal controllers and project engineers. Projects reviewed ranged from dualisation of the Lokoja–Benin Road by CGC Nigeria Ltd. to reconstruction and dualisation works on the Abuja–Lokoja corridor handled by various indigenous firms.

Umahi concluded that President Tinubu’s road infrastructure drive is not only delivering durable highways but also ensuring sustained economic impact through local participation and high-quality construction standards.
