Kano Trains 380 Youths to Tackle Phone Snatching, Thuggery

Kano State Government has commenced the training of 380 youths, the first batch of 600 volunteers, as part of its new initiative to curb phone snatching, thuggery, and related crimes in the state.

The trainees, recruited to serve as members of the Special Anti-Phone Snatching and VIP Protection Guards, began a two-week intensive programme at the Kano State Corporate Security Institute in Gabasawa. The training is designed to equip them with the necessary skills to protect lives and property across the state.

In a statement made available to The Nation, Muhammad Idris, Director of Public Relations and Enlightenment, Ministry of Internal Security and Special Services, said, “The trainees represent the first batch of 600 volunteers recruited to serve as members of the Special Anti-Phone Snatching and VIP Protection Guards. The training is aimed at equipping them with the skills and discipline needed to support security agencies in maintaining peace and order.”

The Commandant of the Institute, retired Captain Muhammad Bello Mai Gaskiya, explained that the programme provides paramilitary training focused on phone snatching prevention, VIP protection, defensive driving, physical fitness, and parade drills. Trainees will also receive lectures from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and counselling sessions from Hisbah personnel.

Mai Gaskiya urged the youths to commit fully to the training, noting that their role would be crucial in restoring order and security in communities across Kano State.

Upon completion of the training, the volunteers will be formally absorbed by the state government and receive a monthly stipend.

  • A cross-section of the trainees thanked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the opportunity, pledging to serve with dedication.
