Police to recommence tinted glass permit enforcement January 2

 

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced that it will resume enforcement of the tinted glass permit nationwide from January 2, 2026, citing prevailing security concerns.

In a statement on Monday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the decision followed a review of the security situation, noting that criminal elements had exploited the suspension of the policy to perpetrate armed robbery, kidnapping and other violent crimes.

Hundeyin clarified that the enforcement was not halted by any court order, stressing that the courts did not restrain the police from implementing the law on the use of tinted glass on vehicles.

According to him, the earlier suspension was a voluntary step by the police to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation and complete the permit registration process without undue pressure.

“The Nigeria Police Force wishes to inform the general public of the planned resumption of the enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy pending the final determination of the matter currently before the court,” the statement read.

“This decision follows a careful review of emerging security concerns and the need to ensure the safety of all citizens.

“It is important to clarify that at no point did the court restrain the Nigeria Police Force from enforcing the provisions of the law regarding the use of tinted glass on vehicles.

“Nonetheless, in the spirit of responsibility, transparency and public convenience, the Force suspended enforcement to allow motorists ample opportunity to regularise their documentation,” Hundeyin said.

The police urged vehicle owners with tinted glasses to ensure full compliance with the law ahead of the January 2 enforcement date.
