Akwa Ibom Urges Diaspora, Indigenes to Invest in State’s Development

IThe Akwa Ibom State Government has called on prominent sons and daughters, both within Nigeria and in the diaspora, to return home and invest in the state’s economic development, stressing that such investments would create employment opportunities and spur growth.

The appeal was made by the Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Mr. Iniobong Ekong, while responding to questions from journalists in Itu Local Government Area. He noted that despite the state’s abundant natural resources, landmass, and human capital, Akwa Ibom remains largely a civil service-driven economy due to limited industrialisation.

Ekong, who represented Governor Umo Eno at the event, said the state was creating an enabling environment for business by declaring a state of emergency on power, constructing rural feeder roads, and initiating a review of the regulatory framework to ease the process of doing business—a bill currently before the State House of Assembly.

“The benefits of investing back home cannot be overstated, especially for those returning from the diaspora,” Ekong said. “When I visited this facility, I was inspired because it represents progress for our people in employment, social services, trade, and economic investment. I urge others to come home and contribute to building our communities. Home is home, and nothing will be judged based on what you have achieved elsewhere.”

He added that while challenges remain in scaling up businesses, the Governor’s strategic interventions provide the foundation for success. Ekong also emphasised the state’s commitment to delivering quality infrastructure and fostering lasting partnerships with local communities, citing ongoing projects in Itu as a model.
