Lagos Orders Delivery Riders to Wear Reflective Jacket

Lagos Orders Delivery Riders to Wear Reflective Jackets, Boosts Night-Time Road Safety

Lagos State Government has directed all courier and delivery service operators in the state to ensure their riders wear reflective jackets and equip their motorcycles and bicycles with visibility tapes during evening and night-time operations.

The directive, issued on Sunday by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Olawale Musa, was conveyed through the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport Education and Innovation, Mr. Oluwatobi Idowu. It was formally announced in a statement signed by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Bolanle Ogunlola.

Musa explained that the measure is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety and reduce accidents involving dispatch riders.

“All riders operating between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. must wear reflective jackets, while all delivery motorcycles and bicycles must be fitted with reflective tapes or markers for visibility,” he said.

He added that delivery companies must educate their riders on the directive and ensure full compliance. Defaulters risk sanctions from enforcement agencies, including the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS).

In response, Glovo Nigeria, one of the state’s leading delivery service providers, pledged full adherence to the new safety regulation. In a letter signed by its General Manager, Mr. Lamide Akinola, the company commended the government for prioritising the safety of riders and other road users.

Akinola disclosed that Glovo would distribute 3,000 reflective vests free of charge to its riders within the next month. “We encourage other delivery companies in the state to adopt similar measures,” he said.

The Ministry of Transportation welcomed Glovo’s initiative, describing it as a positive partnership between government and service providers in building a safer delivery ecosystem across Lagos State.
