Ibas Hands Over, Rivers Returns To Civil Rule Under Fubara

The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.), yesterday formally handed over power to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, marking the end of six months of emergency rule in the oil-rich state.

Ibas, who was appointed by President Bola Tinubu in March to restore stability at the height of political turmoil, said law and order had returned and urged Rivers people to rally behind the governor.

In a farewell broadcast in Port Harcourt, the former Chief of Naval Staff highlighted what he described as “milestones of progress” achieved under his watch including the conduct of local government elections, reconstitution of statutory boards, and the passage of the state budget by the National Assembly.

He warned political leaders against reckless use of power, noting that democracy thrives only when rivalry is managed with dialogue.

“The exercise of power without restraint can cripple institutions, and rivalry without dialogue endangers democracy,” Ibas said.

“May this state never again be brought to the brink of collapse. May we always choose unity over division, dialogue over discord, and progress over paralysis.”

Expressing gratitude to President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him, Ibas commended security agencies for their role in stabilising the state and praised the resilience of Rivers people during the crisis.

Handing over to Fubara, he added: “Leadership and followership is a shared responsibility. No matter how clear your vision is, it can only succeed with the active support of citizens.”

President Tinubu had in March declared a state of emergency in Rivers after months of political hostilities threatened governance and security. With yesterday’s transition, full democratic governance has now resumed.
