Benue’s Oldest Pastor, Pa Simon Mashika, Dies at 95

The Christian community in Benue State has been thrown into mourning following the passing of Pa Simon Agu Mashika, believed to be the oldest pastor in the state.

He died peacefully on Thursday at the age of 95.

Born in 1930, Pa Mashika devoted over seven decades to gospel ministry, preaching with simplicity, discipline, and unwavering faith. Even in his advanced years, he remained vibrant, often driving himself to church services and reading the Bible without glasses — a trait that left many in awe.

Until his death, he was a regular face at the programmes of the Remnant Christian Network in Makurdi, where he frequently offered prayers and counsel.

Founder of the ministry, Apostle Arome Osayi, described him as “a pathfinder, a blazing model, and an honourable kingdom ambassador.”

Tributes have poured in across Benue and beyond. Many described him as a “soldier of the faith,” “a beloved father,” and “a man of wisdom and compassion.” Others credited him with strengthening the foundation of Christianity in the state and mentoring generations of ministers.

One mourner wrote: “Though our hearts are heavy, we rejoice that Papa has fought the good fight and finished the race. His legacy of love for God and passion for souls will remain alive in every life he touched.”

Pa Mashika is survived by his family, spiritual children, and countless admirers. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
