Tuggar, US Envoy Meet on Security, Wider Bilateral Ties

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, on Monday met with the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, to deliberate on strengthening bilateral cooperation between both countries, particularly in areas of shared interest.

The meeting, which took place in Abuja, was disclosed by the US Embassy through a post on X, accompanied by photographs. While details of the discussions were not made public, the embassy reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to sustained engagement with Nigeria on issues of mutual concern.

The engagement comes amid growing diplomatic and security consultations between Nigeria and the United States. It followed a recent visit to Nigeria by Riley Moore, a United States congressman, who revealed that both countries were close to finalising a “strategic security framework” aimed at addressing terrorism and other security challenges in the West African sub-region.

Moore, who visited Nigeria alongside other members of the US Congress on a fact-finding mission, toured some communities in Benue State and held talks with the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu, in Abuja.

According to the lawmaker, the discussions with Nigerian officials were productive, expressing optimism that the proposed framework would enhance cooperation in tackling threats posed by terrorist groups such as Boko Haram and ISIS, as well as broader security concerns in affected regions.

Moore added that he would submit a comprehensive report to US President Donald Trump, outlining observations from the visit and possible steps to deepen security collaboration between both nations.

The meeting between Tuggar and Mills is seen as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to reinforce Nigeria–US relations, particularly in security, governance and regional stability.
