Wike Leads Rivers Assembly Members, LG Chairmen to Fubara’s Residence

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has led members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, local government chairmen and other political leaders to a closed-door meeting with Governor Siminalayi Fubara in Port Harcourt.

The meeting, held at Fubara’s residence on Sunday evening, came amid renewed efforts to reconcile the two political camps following the prolonged crisis that rocked the state.

Although the agenda of the meeting was not officially disclosed, sources said the discussions were aimed at strengthening reconciliation efforts and exploring ways to accommodate Fubara’s loyalists ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The delegation included lawmakers led by the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, the 23 local government chairmen and members of the Rainbow Coalition.

Kingsley Chinda, identified in the report as the All Progressives Congress candidate for the 2027 elections, was also part of the delegation.

The meeting marked the first time Wike and the lawmakers had visited Fubara at his residence.

It followed an earlier meeting weeks ago, when Wike led members of the Rainbow Coalition, including Chinda, to meet with the governor as part of efforts to ease tensions between the rival camps.

The latest engagement reportedly ended on a cordial note, with Wike, Fubara, the lawmakers and other attendees seen smiling as they emerged from the meeting.

A video recorded at the entrance to the residence showed Amaewhule and other lawmakers greeting the governor, shaking his hand and addressing him as “Your Excellency”. Fubara acknowledged the greetings with smiles before rejoining Wike for a group photograph.

Fubara and the Amaewhule-led House of Assembly had been locked in a prolonged political dispute following disagreements between the governor and his predecessor, Wike.

At the height of the crisis, lawmakers made two attempts to impeach Fubara before President Bola Tinubu intervened by declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State, leading to the suspension of the governor and other elected officials.

Despite subsequent reconciliation efforts, Wike had ruled out supporting Fubara for a second term and backed Chinda as his preferred candidate for the 2027 elections.

However, with the next general elections approaching, the minister has intensified efforts to reunite political leaders from both camps under the Rainbow Coalition.
