Army Chief Arrives in Rwanda for Talks on Counterterrorism, Regional Security
The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has arrived in Kigali, Rwanda, for a working visit aimed at strengthening bilateral military cooperation and improving joint responses to security threats across Africa.
The visit, scheduled for October 18 to 23, 2026, is at the invitation of the Rwanda Defence Force Army Chief of Staff, Major General Vincent Nyakarundi.
Shaibu was received on arrival by Nyakarundi and Nigeria’s Acting High Commissioner to Rwanda, Ambassador Ibrahim Zanna.
In a statement posted on X on Sunday, the Nigerian Army said the engagement would provide an opportunity for both armies to exchange operational experiences, deepen defence collaboration and explore joint approaches to counterterrorism, emerging security challenges and regional stability.
The Army said the visit underscored Shaibu’s commitment to strengthening African military partnerships, promoting mutual capacity development and advancing collective security in line with the Nigerian Army’s transformation agenda.
Discussions are expected to focus on professional exchanges and practical strategies for enhancing cooperation between the two forces in tackling common security threats across the continent.
Further details of the engagements are expected in the coming days.
