Osun Taskforce Arrests Resident for Indiscriminate Waste Disposal in Osogbo

The Osun State Government’s Environment Taskforce has arrested a resident for allegedly dumping refuse indiscriminately in Osogbo, the state capital.

In a video shared by an aide to Governor Ademola Adeleke, the woman was seen being directed to enter the taskforce’s waiting vehicle.

The exact location of the arrest was not disclosed.

The woman was heard appealing to the officials not to capture her face, while a voice in the background criticised the act, noting that the state government had repeatedly sensitised residents against indiscriminate waste disposal.

The arrest comes days after the state government warned that anyone caught dumping refuse on roads would be made to sweep the street, pay a N50,000 fine and be publicly paraded before the media.

The Commissioner for Environment and Deputy Chairman of the Osun Environment Committee, Mayowa Adejoorin, had expressed concern over residents abandoning proper waste disposal methods and dumping refuse on roads, particularly at night.

Adejoorin urged residents to use waste bins and engage accredited waste collection companies, stressing that roads should not be used as dumping grounds.

He warned that the taskforce would apprehend anyone caught violating the directive, regardless of their status.

Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Affairs and member of the committee, Muniru Raji, disclosed that market leaders from major markets across Osogbo had been invited for sensitisation on proper waste disposal.

The taskforce reiterated the government’s commitment to keeping Osun clean and urged residents and traders to use accredited waste collectors and desist from dumping refuse on roads and drainages.
