Taiwan Receives First US-Made F-16V Fighter Jets

Taiwan has received its first two US-made F-16V fighter jets as the island moves to strengthen its military capabilities amid tensions with China.

The aircraft, manufactured by Lockheed Martin, arrived at Taiwan’s air force base in Taitung on Friday.

The jets are part of an $8 billion deal for 66 F-16Vs approved by the United States during President Donald Trump’s first term, with deliveries scheduled for this year.

The F-16V is an upgraded version of Taiwan’s ageing F-16 A/B fleet, featuring improved combat, detection and engine capabilities.

Taiwan’s Defence Minister, Wellington Koo, said additional F-16Vs would be delivered before the end of the year, although he did not disclose the number.

The arrival comes as Taiwan awaits US approval for a separate $14 billion arms package, which reportedly includes the Patriot air defence system.

Trump has delayed approval of the package, describing it as a negotiating tool in dealings with China.

China claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has threatened to use force to bring the island under its control.

The United States is Taiwan’s major security partner and arms supplier, although delays have affected the delivery of some weapons.

Military expert Su Tzu-yun of the Taipei-based Institute for National Defense and Security Research described the F-16Vs as a valuable addition to Taiwan’s air force in responding to China’s military capabilities.
