Argentine President Javier Milei has criticised the United Nations, describing the organisation as “useless” and accusing it of failing to guarantee collective security and human rights.

Milei made the remarks on Wednesday while addressing the UN, where he also accused the organisation of allowing “chaos, violence and international terrorism” to flourish.

He said the UN had become “a useless organization, serving only to feed a caste of fatally arrogant parasites disguised as well-intentioned bureaucrats.”

Milei also criticised the organisation’s handling of Argentina’s claim to the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, which have remained under British administration since the two countries fought a war over the territory in 1982.

Argentina has accused Britain of failing to comply with a UN resolution calling on both sides to refrain from unilateral actions concerning the islands.

“Those who follow the rules receive no reward for doing so, while those who break them face no repercussions whatsoever,” Milei said.

The Argentine president has previously used international forums to criticise multilateral institutions and what he describes as progressive or “woke” policies.

Meanwhile, Argentina and the United States announced a joint initiative aimed at improving infrastructure and connecting Argentina’s key economic sectors to Atlantic ports and Western markets.

The initiative, known as the Andes-Atlantic Corridor, is expected to focus on transport, digital infrastructure, minerals and energy, including the Vaca Muerta hydrocarbon formation in southern Argentina.
