Edo Governor Rewards Edo Queens N50m for WAFU-B Triumph

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has rewarded Edo Queens with N50 million following their victory over Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League.

Okpebholo announced the reward on Tuesday during the presentation of the 2025/26 Nigeria Women’s Football League and 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League trophies at the Festival Hall, Government House, Benin.

Edo Queens played a 2-2 draw with Ampem Darkoa Ladies after regulation time before securing a 4-1 victory in the penalty shootout.

The governor commended the players for their resilience and determination throughout the competition, saying the victory was significant to Edo State and Nigeria.

Okpebholo said he became confident of victory during the penalty shootout after observing the composure and strategy of the team’s goalkeeper, particularly her crucial saves.

He also commended the coach, technical crew and other officials for their contributions to the team’s success.

“For me, this trophy matters to Edo people and the country. I must commend the players for their doggedness. I also want to thank the coaching crew and other officials.

“I want to reward the team with the sum of N50 million,” Okpebholo said.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Edo Sports Commission, Amadin Enabulele, praised the team for winning both the Nigeria Women’s Football League and WAFU-B championship in the same season.

“Our girls have truly done us proud. To win the Nigeria Women’s Football League and the WAFU-B championship in the same season is no small feat.

“It requires grit, unity, discipline, resilience and an unshakeable belief in oneself,” he said.

Enabulele also commended the team’s management, coaches and technical crew for their sacrifices and commitment to the success of Edo Queens.
