China-Nepal Flood Death Toll Surpasses 1,000

The death toll from devastating floods along the China-Nepal border has risen to more than 1,000, with Nepal recording 987 deaths and China confirming 16 fatalities.

Nepal’s disaster authority disclosed the latest figure on Tuesday as rescue operations entered their seventh day following the floods that struck the region last Wednesday.

The number of missing persons in Nepal dropped to 3,916, while authorities continued recovering bodies and searching affected areas.

In China, state media reported that 546 people remained missing, bringing the overall number of missing persons across the two countries to 4,462.

The missing persons in Nepal include 583 foreigners from more than 30 nationalities, while 261 foreigners from 23 countries are among those reported missing in China.

Indians constitute one of the largest groups of missing foreigners in Nepal, with 275 Indian citizens and 128 people of Indian origin reported missing, according to Indian authorities.

The United States has also reported 85 citizens missing, while 62 Ukrainians, 51 Malaysians, 42 Australians and 33 British citizens are among those reported missing.

Meanwhile, authorities in India’s Uttar Pradesh State said they had recovered 17 bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal.

The bodies are believed to be those of people killed in the floods, but they have not been included in the official death toll pending identification.

Rescue and recovery operations are continuing as authorities in Nepal, China and neighbouring India work to account for missing persons and assess the full extent of the disaster.
