The Osun State Government has warned against plans to allegedly ignite fresh crises across local government areas and motor parks in the state following the governorship election.

The warning was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi.

The government described Osun as being in a period of post-election reconciliation and peace-building, urging residents and political actors to avoid actions capable of disrupting public peace.

It also expressed condolences to victims of the pre-election tensions and violence, calling for healing and the restoration of peaceful coexistence across the state.

The government said it was particularly concerned by reports of alleged plans by some stakeholders to cause fresh unrest in local government areas and motor parks.

“The government is particularly disturbed by reports of plans by some stakeholders to ignite fresh rounds of crisis across local government councils and motor parks across the state.

“This plan, if true, should stop immediately in the interest of public peace. Osun needs peace for development, not violence in politics,” the statement read.

The government noted that the election had been concluded and urged all parties to embrace peace, stressing that any attempt to reignite violence would undermine the post-election reconciliation process.

“The Osun election has been won and lost. Mr President and Mr Governor had agreed on a peaceful way forward. Any push towards violence represents an affront on the Presidency and the Nigerian Constitution,” it added.

The state government also called on security agencies to uphold the rule of law and ensure the release of political detainees, while demanding an end to what it described as perceived partisan policing, particularly in the management of local governments and motor parks.

“We call on all political actors to speak and act peacefully. Osun should be in a period of healing and building. We must not allow a relapse into the pre-election era of killings and violence,” the statement said.
