The Osun State Governorship Campaign Council of the African Democratic Congress (ADC-GCC) has condemned the recent wave of violence and killings in Osogbo, alleging that the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Accord Party are responsible for the worsening security situation in the state.

The spokesperson for the ADC-GCC, Hon. Nurein Adebisi, in a statement issued on Tuesday, said the attacks around NURTW motor parks in Osogbo had exposed what he described as a total breakdown of law and order. He accused the APC and Accord of promoting violence through their struggle for control of transport unions, urging Governor Ademola Adeleke to immediately take decisive steps to restore peace and protect lives and property.

The campaign council expressed concern that residents, transport operators and traders could no longer carry out their lawful activities without fear of attacks, describing the development as unacceptable.

According to the ADC, the violence recorded in and around motor parks in the last 48 hours underscores the urgent need for stronger security measures to prevent further loss of lives.

The council further alleged that the politics of imposition, desperation for control of transport unions and the use of thuggery by the APC and Accord had contributed to the deteriorating security environment in the state.

While stressing that security should not be treated as a partisan matter, the ADC maintained that the failure of relevant authorities and political actors to place public safety above political interests had emboldened criminal elements.

The opposition party called on Governor Adeleke to live up to his constitutional responsibility of safeguarding lives and property, citing Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, which provides that the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.

The ADC also urged the state government to strengthen security around motor parks and other identified flashpoints in Osogbo, arrest and prosecute all those responsible for the attacks irrespective of their political affiliations, and dismantle criminal groups allegedly being used for political violence.

The council expressed sympathy with the families of those who lost their lives and pledged to continue speaking out until lasting peace and security are restored across Osun State.
