Kwankwaso confirms written one-term agreement with Obi

Former Kano State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has confirmed that he and the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, signed a written agreement committing Obi to serve only one four-year term if elected president in 2027.

 

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television, Kwankwaso said the agreement provides that power will return to the North after Obi’s single tenure, adding that he believes the former Anambra State governor will honour the commitment.

 

“Oh yes, I personally believe him and I don’t think, based on what I now know about him, he will change his mind when the time comes. We are all gentlemen, even though we have accepted to put it on paper,” he said.

 

Kwankwaso disclosed that two separate agreements were signed—one between the two politicians and another involving the party.

 

“We have done one for the party, and we have done another one between the two of us,” he stated.

 

According to him, both leaders agreed to work together to ensure that after their administration from 2027 to 2031, the presidency would return to the North.

 

Explaining why he accepted the vice-presidential position, Kwankwaso said the current political realities support a four-year southern presidency before power rotates back to the North.

 

He added that while the party is focused on winning the 2027 election, it also has medium- and long-term plans for the country’s future.

 

Peter Obi has on several occasions stated that he would serve only one term if elected, saying the decision is aimed at promoting political stability and national unity.
