Court Remands Ex-CCT Chairman Danladi Umar Over Alleged Corruption

A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting in Maitama has remanded the former Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), Danladi Umar, at the Kuje Correctional Centre over alleged corruption.

Justice Peter Kekemeke issued the order on Thursday after the Federal Government arraigned Umar on a four-count charge bordering on alleged abuse of office and corruption. The former CCT chairman pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to the prosecution, Umar allegedly used his wife’s bank account to receive N5.5 million from a contractor engaged to paint the CCT headquarters in Abuja in 2021. He was also accused of receiving N6 million through the same account in 2024 from a contractor handling the digitisation of the tribunal’s records.

The Federal Government further alleged that Umar directed another contractor to pay N2.43 million as tuition fees for his daughter at Baze University, Abuja, contrary to the provisions of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.

Following his plea, the prosecution applied for his remand pending trial, while the defence sought bail. However, the prosecution requested time to respond to the bail application, prompting the court to adjourn the matter until July 15 for the hearing of the bail application.

Justice Kekemeke subsequently ordered that the former CCT chairman be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending further proceedings.
