Switzerland secured a place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Algeria 2-0 on Thursday.

The Swiss side will now face the winners of Friday’s Round of 32 clash between Colombia and Ghana.

Breel Embolo opened the scoring in Vancouver after finishing off a cross from Johan Manzambi, who made an impressive run down the left flank before delivering the assist.

Dan Ndoye doubled Switzerland’s advantage in the second half, firing through a crowded penalty area. Algeria goalkeeper Luca Zidane got a hand to the effort but was unable to prevent the ball from finding the net.

The result ends Algeria’s World Cup campaign and adds them to the list of African teams eliminated in the Round of 32, alongside Ivory Coast, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Senegal.

Morocco remain the only African nation to have progressed to the Round of 16 so far.
