Oke Commends Police Over Alleged Assassination Attempt, Demands Justice for Political Violence Victims
The Director-General of the Osun State Gubernatorial Campaign Council, Hon. Oluwole Oke, has commended the Osun State Police Command for what he described as its professionalism, transparency and swift response to the alleged assassination attempt on his life, while urging the Command to ensure a thorough investigation and prosecution of everyone connected with the incident.
The Senior Media Aide to Oke and Director of the Media and Publicity Directorate of the campaign council, Omolebi-Sunday Segun Tunde, in a statement issued on Thursday, said the campaign council appreciated the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, and officers of the Command for their prompt intervention, which reportedly led to the arrest of suspects and the recovery of a firearm. He said the action of the police prevented what could have resulted in a tragic loss of life.
The statement urged the Police to pursue the investigation to its logical conclusion by identifying, arresting and prosecuting all individuals linked to the alleged attack, irrespective of their political status or influence, stressing that only a transparent and diligent investigation would reassure the public that no one is above the law.
Oke also called on security agencies to remain impartial and proactive as the state approaches another political season, noting that residents must be able to participate freely in the democratic process without fear of intimidation or violence.
While expressing gratitude to God for preserving his life, the federal lawmaker said no act of political intimidation or violence would deter him from his commitment to the peace, liberation and democratic advancement of Osun State.
The statement further urged the Osun State Police Command to expedite and make public the outcome of its investigation into the killing of Ajayi Aderogba in Esa-Oke, arguing that justice delayed in cases of political violence only emboldens criminal elements and weakens public confidence in security institutions.
Oke also decried the growing menace of political violence, cult-related activities and criminal intimidation in the state, insisting that there should be no safe haven for political thugs, cultists or any individuals seeking to disrupt the peace of Osun.
He appealed to political actors, their supporters and residents of the state to reject violence and embrace issue-based campaigns anchored on democratic values, while encouraging the Nigeria Police Force to remain steadfast, impartial and fearless in ensuring that justice prevails.
