UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer announces resignation

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as leader of the Labour Party after less than two years in office, bringing an end to a tenure marked by policy reversals and mounting political pressure.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, an emotional Starmer said his decision was driven by what he believed was in the country’s best interest.

“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first. That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party,” he said.

Starmer disclosed that the Labour Party would begin the process of electing a new leader in July, adding that he would remain prime minister until a successor is chosen before Parliament returns from its summer recess in September.

“I will remain in post as prime minister until the contest is complete, and I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly handover of power,” he added.

His resignation follows months of internal party pressure, public dissatisfaction and a series of political setbacks, despite earlier insisting he would remain in office.

Labour politician Andy Burnham, who recently returned to Parliament after winning a by-election, is widely regarded as a leading contender to succeed Starmer.

Starmer came to power after leading Labour to victory in the 2024 general election, ending 14 years of Conservative rule. However, his administration faced criticism over welfare reforms, defence spending plans and the growing popularity of the anti-immigration Reform UK party.

His departure means the United Kingdom is set to have its seventh prime minister in a decade.
