Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has explained the emotions behind his tears after starring in his country’s shock 0-0 draw against Spain at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

The 40-year-old produced a heroic performance, making seven saves to help Cape Verde secure a historic result against Luis de la Fuente’s side in Georgia.

At the final whistle, Vozinha was seen in tears after becoming the oldest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet on World Cup debut, as well as one of the standout performers of the match.

Speaking after the game, the veteran shot-stopper said his emotions were tied to personal family memories and missed moments with loved ones.

He revealed that he was raised by his grandparents, who both passed away years ago, adding that he wished they could have witnessed his World Cup appearance.

Vozinha also disclosed that his mother was unable to attend the tournament due to visa issues and financial constraints.

“I cried after the game because I was raised by my grandparents during my childhood, and they could not be there. They passed away a few years ago,” he said.

He added that the achievement meant a lot to him and his country, describing Cape Verde’s World Cup debut as the realisation of a long-held dream.

Vozinha, who plays for Portuguese second-division side Chaves, was named Man of the Match for his performance, which included a series of crucial saves that denied the Spanish attack.
